The Urgent Need for Action

Alarming Statistics

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, Maharashtra reported 22,207 suicides and Tamil Nadu 18,925 suicides among youth and students in 2021. Tamil Nadu has consistently ranked second in suicide rates from 2018 to 2023. The World Health Organization states that approximately 800,000 people commit suicide annually, with India accounting for 20% of these cases.

Economic Impact

In 2021, the economic cost of suicides in Tamil Nadu was INR 30,000 crore, reducing the state's GDP by 1.3%.

Mental Health Crisis

India has only 0.75 mental health professionals per 100,000 people, compared to six per 100,000 in developed countries. The need for mental health support is therefore critical.
